Ambassador Wang Lixin applauds over 5,000 patients treated in China’s eye care campaign in Maldives

Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Wang Lixin, has celebrated the remarkable impact of the “Bright Journey” eye care initiative, which has provided crucial medical services to about 5,000 Maldivians since its launch in 2016.

In a post made today on social media platform X, Ambassador Wang expressed her delight in attending the opening ceremony of the latest eye camp in Thinadhoo, stating,

Delighted to attend the launching ceremony of Eye Camp by the Chinese Ophthalmic Experts in Thinadhoo, which is a vivid testament of the profound friendship between China and the Maldives.

The Thinadhoo camp, staffed by a dedicated team of Chinese ophthalmologists, offered free consultations to around 180 local patients over two days, underscoring China’s commitment to enhancing healthcare in the Maldives.

Ambassador Wang emphasized her hope that such close cooperation will continue to yield benefits for the local population.

Since its inception, the Bright Journey program has made a substantial difference throughout the Maldives.

Chinese medical teams have treated nearly 5,000 patients and performed over 600 eye surgeries, delivering essential healthcare to underserved communities.

underscoring the program's success and extensive reach.

The initiative began with Chinese experts providing free eye screenings and conducting 107 cataract surgeries at Hulhumale Hospital in 2016.

Since then, it has expanded to include regular camps across the Maldives, offering eye screenings, cataract surgeries, and essential medical equipment.

In 2020, the partnership between China and the Maldives was further solidified with the establishment of the China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center, which continues to serve as a hub for sustainable eye care.

Ambassador Wang commended the Bright Journey program for fostering goodwill and mutual understanding, describing it as a “great contribution to promoting China-Maldives friendship.”

She expressed optimism that this collaboration will continue to deliver tangible benefits to Maldivian communities for years to come.
