President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Aishath Azeema to serve as the Maldives’ new High Commissioner to India.

The nomination has been forwarded to the Parliamentary Committee for review and approval.

Azeema, who currently holds the position of Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is set to replace Ibrahim Shaheeb, whose term as High Commissioner to India has recently expired.

Shaheeb had held the role since November 2022, having been appointed during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.

A seasoned diplomat, Azeema previously served as the Maldives’ Ambassador to China from 2019 to 2023 and as Deputy Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Her nomination comes at a pivotal time, with relations between the Maldives and India seeing renewed improvement.
