In a significant diplomatic engagement this morning, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu welcomed the new Ambassador of the European Union to the Maldives, Her Excellency Maria Carmen Moreno Raymundo, at a ceremony held at the President's Office where she presented her letter of credence.

Following the presentation, President Dr Muizzu and Ambassador Moreno Raymundo discussed key areas of cooperation, focusing prominently on the recently signed Samoa Agreement.

They explored how this agreement could help reduce tariffs on Maldivian fishing exports, an important sector for the country's economy.

President Dr Muizzu expressed his gratitude for the European Union’s ongoing support and highlighted the importance of the Samoa Agreement, signed earlier this month between the EU, its member states, and OACPS member countries.

This agreement aims to enhance economic development, sustainable growth, and address environmental and climate change initiatives in the Maldives.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the European Union were established in 1983, and the recent discussions mark a new chapter in their partnership.

The Samoa Agreement signed earlier this month, is seen as a crucial step in fostering stronger economic ties and promoting sustainable development in the Maldives.
