The taxi driver involved in a fatal road accident in Malaysia that killed a Maldivian student and injured another has tested positive for methamphetamine, according to Malaysian police.
The crash occurred late Sunday near the PJS Toll Plaza on the New Pantai Expressway (NPE), in the direction of Puchong.
Subang Jaya District Police Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan said the accident was reported at around 8:48 p.m.
Police said a Perodua Ativa taxi, driven by a 37-year-old Malaysian man, lost control while approaching the RFID lane and struck the rear right side of a Proton S70. The Proton was being driven by a 34-year-old man.
The collision caused the taxi to overturn. Two Maldivian students studying at a private college in the Klang Valley were travelling in the taxi at the time.
One of the students, identified as 21-year-old Aminath Imilee Nazim from S. Hithadhoo, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical personnel.
Her body was taken to the Forensic Department at Shah Alam Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The other Maldivian student suffered minor injuries.
Drug screening conducted on both drivers found that the taxi driver tested positive for methamphetamine.
The Shah Alam First Magistrate’s Court has subsequently granted police a four-day remand order as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Police are investigating the case under Section 44(1)(a) of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public who witnessed the accident or have dashcam recordings of the incident to come forward. Information can be provided to Investigating Officer Azizul from the Subang Jaya District Traffic Investigation Unit at 011-28914495.
