The Gadhdhoo Magistrate Court has sentenced a 37-year-old man to 25 years in prison and fined him MVR 100,000 after finding him guilty of trafficking diamorphine.

The sentence was handed down to Ali Shazeene of Noorige, GDh. Gadhdhoo, following the conclusion of a case that was first reported to the Maldives Police Service in August 2021.

According to police, the investigation began on August 10, 2021, following allegations that Shazeene was storing and distributing narcotics at a farming site under his management in GDh. Gan.

A court-authorised search of the premises subsequently resulted in the discovery of suspected illicit drugs and alcohol.

Following the investigation, the case was forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office on September 1, 2021.

The prosecution later brought two separate charges against Shazeene trafficking controlled substances and engaging in a restricted activity without the required legal authorisation.

The court found that the prosecution had proven both charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

Shazeene was subsequently sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of MVR 100,000.
