Maldives has recorded five additional measles cases over the past week, bringing the total number of confirmed infections this year to 20, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The latest cases were identified in the Greater Malé area as health authorities continue efforts to contain the spread of the highly contagious disease.

The HPA reported that most of the confirmed cases involve Maldivian nationals aged over 18.

As part of its ongoing investigation, the agency has identified 489 individuals who may have been exposed to the virus.

Of these, 88 people remain under active monitoring while health officials continue contact tracing and surveillance measures.

To prevent further transmission, the HPA is providing vaccinations to contacts who have not completed the recommended two-dose measles vaccination schedule.

So far, 220 individuals identified through contact tracing have received the vaccine.

Health authorities have also launched a special vaccination campaign targeting children who have not completed their routine immunizations.

The initiative aims to strengthen community protection and reduce the risk of further outbreaks.

In addition, frontline healthcare workers are being vaccinated as a precautionary measure.

According to the HPA, 1,118 healthcare workers have already received measles vaccinations under the ongoing campaign.

The agency continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and ensure that vaccinations are up to date, while health officials work to contain the spread of the disease and prevent additional cases across the country.
