Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed appreciation to Fayyaz Ismail for his efforts to resolve internal disputes within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), as the party moves towards a unified leadership approach.

In a social media post, Nasheed thanked Fayyaz for his role in easing tensions within the party, while also extending congratulations to former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and MDP President Abdulla Shahid.

Internal rifts within the MDP emerged following a rally held last Monday to celebrate the party’s victory in the local council elections, where Nasheed and Fayyaz were reportedly denied the opportunity to address supporters.

The incident led to both leaders, along with several of their supporters, boycotting the event.

Dissatisfaction among party members intensified in the aftermath, culminating in a petition calling for a no-confidence vote against Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa.

Addressing a rally held in Lh. Hinnavaru, Solih stated that senior party figures had engaged in discussions to resolve the disputes, describing the tensions as challenges the party has faced previously.

He acknowledged that the internal divisions had disheartened party members, but assured that a resolution would be announced soon.

Solih further emphasised that the party leadership would remain united in its efforts to secure victory in the 2028 presidential elections, adding that no individual would be excluded from these efforts.

In a significant development announced today, the MDP has decided to transfer the management of the party to an interim committee comprising five senior leaders, in a move aimed at stabilising internal dynamics.

The proposed committee includes Solih, Fayyaz, Nasheed, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, and Abdulla Shahid, and is expected to oversee party affairs until a new chairperson is elected.
