MDP criticises government over transparency on Middle East crisis impact
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has raised concerns over what it describes as a lack of transparency and clarity from the government regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its potential impact on the Maldives.
In a statement, the opposition party highlighted the broader implications of the conflict, noting disruptions to global oil markets and the tourism sector, both of which are critical to the Maldivian economy.
The MDP also questioned the priorities of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, alleging that the administration is focusing on advancing a constitutional referendum rather than addressing pressing economic challenges during a period of global uncertainty.
The party pointed to recent developments in fuel pricing, noting that a price increase of around 20% was implemented shortly after assurances were given that there was no immediate concern regarding oil supplies.
It further stated that the government’s subsequent move to seek assistance from India for fuel imports raises questions about the consistency of earlier statements.
Despite its criticism, the MDP acknowledged the continued support extended by India to the Maldives during challenging periods.
The opposition also expressed concern over the government’s approach to managing the evolving situation, stating that while other countries in the region are adopting coordinated strategies to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs, the Maldivian government appears to be acting without sufficient consultation or openness.
In response to the unfolding situation, President Dr. Muizzu had earlier established a special cabinet committee on February 28, 2026, tasked with monitoring the developments linked to the Middle East crisis.
The committee has since held a press briefing to address questions from the media regarding the country’s preparedness and response measures.
