Former President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan, who served as the President’s Special Envoy, has resigned from his position, the President’s Office confirmed today.

According to the President’s Office, Dr Waheed submitted his resignation letter to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu earlier this morning.

No official reason for his resignation has been disclosed.

The resignation follows heightened public scrutiny after reports surfaced alleging Dr Waheed’s past links to Jeffrey Epstein, who was arrested in the United States in 2019 on federal sex-trafficking charges involving minors.

Leaked communications released by the United States Department of Justice, including emails and text messages, have reportedly suggested that during his tenure as Vice President and later as President, Dr Waheed shared information concerning the Maldivian political situation with Epstein.

No formal charges or legal findings against Dr Waheed have been announced in connection with these claims.
