Austrian Airlines begins operations at VIA’s new terminal 1
Velana International Airport’s (VIA) newly opened Terminal 1 has officially commenced handling flights for Austria’s national carrier, Austrian Airlines.
A special ceremony was held today to mark the milestone, graced by Fathimath Ramiza, Director of Air Navigation and Aerodromes at the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority.
The event brought together Austrian Airlines Station Manager Robert Harvey, officials from the airline, and senior executives of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
As part of the ceremony, Austrian Airlines’ dedicated check-in counters at Terminal 1 were formally launched.
Gifts were distributed to the 321 passengers departing on the inaugural flight handled by the new terminal.
The first Austrian Airlines flight to be welcomed at Terminal 1 , OS021 arrived to a vibrant cultural reception celebrating the airline’s long-standing connection with the Maldives.
Austrian Airlines has been operating flights to the Maldives since November 2, 1995. With the inclusion of Austrian Airlines, Terminal 1 now serves 23 international carriers.
Opened on July 26, 2025, the terminal is designed to deliver enhanced service quality, with MACL reiterating its commitment to offering comprehensive, world-class services to all airlines operating to the Maldives.
