The name of former Elections Commission (EC) Vice-President Ismail Habeeb has been forwarded to the parliament for approval as a new member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

This nomination follows the resignation of the former HRCM Vice-President, Dr. Ahmed Adham Abdulla, last October.

Secretary General Fatimath Niusha announced the letter from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, in which he recommended Habeeb for the position.

President Dr Muizzu’s letter highlighted that Habeeb emerged as the preferred candidate after the nomination process was conducted in accordance with Article 5 of the commission's law.

Alongside Habeeb’s name, the president also provided a list of other potential candidates.

The nomination has now been referred to the Human Rights and Gender Committee of parliament for further consideration.

Ismail Habeeb resigned from the EC in March after completing two consecutive terms.

As per the commission's law, a member is limited to serving a maximum of two five-year terms.

Habeeb first joined the commission on March 13, 2014, and was reappointed for a second term on March 13, 2019.
